How to take progress photos.

Take one photo a week — same spot, same lighting, same pose, same time of day. Morning works best, before breakfast. That is the entire technique: a progress photo only shows change if everything except your body stays identical. Get the conditions boring and repeatable, and over a ten-week cut the photo strip shows the fat loss the daily scale hides. The photos are data, not a verdict — treat them like any other measurement.

01Why photos beat the scale

Scale weight is noisy. Water shifts, food timing, sodium, a hard workout — any of them can move the number a kilo in a day, in either direction. That noise says nothing about fat, but it is very good at wrecking your morale on a Wednesday.

Photos work on a different timescale. They ignore the daily noise and integrate change over weeks — the only timescale on which fat loss is actually visible. The mirror can't do this for you, because you look at yourself every day and adapt to your own reflection; by week six, your current body just looks normal to you. A week-1 photo doesn't adapt. It stays exactly where you were, so week 10 has something honest to stand next to.

02The setup: same everything

The technique is not the camera — it is holding every condition constant so the only variable left is you:

None of this requires skill. It requires the same boring setup, repeated. That is the point.

03How to compare week 1 vs week 10

Don't compare week to week — the change is too small to see and the non-result will discourage you for no reason. Compare photos at least three weeks apart, and the difference has room to show up.

When you compare, look for lines and shadows, not overall impression: the waist, the jawline, the shoulders. Overall impression is exactly the thing your brain has adapted to; specific edges and shadows are where change shows first.

And keep the photos private. They are data for you, not content for anyone else. Nobody ever has to see them — which also means you can take them honestly, without posing for an audience.

The app

Simple Shred schedules the photo for you

In Simple Shred, photo day is a weekly checklist item — the app reminds you, so the habit never depends on remembering. Photos are stored locally on your phone: no cloud, no account, nobody else ever sees them. At the end of the cut, the app builds your before/after from the strip. Free while in early access, on iOS and Android.
